ABSTRACT

Recent advancements in nanotechnology have resulted in improved medicine delivery to the target site. Nanosponges are three-dimensional drug delivery systems that are nanoscale in size and created by cross-linking polymers. The introduction of Nanosponges has been a significant step toward overcoming issues such as drug toxicity, low bioavailability, and predictable medication release. Using a new way of nanotechnology, nanosponges, which are porous with small sponges (below one microm) flowing throughout the body, have demonstrated excellent results in delivering drugs. As a result, they reach the target place, attach to the skin's surface, and slowly release the medicine. Nanosponges can be used to encapsulate a wide range of medicines, including both hydrophilic and lipophilic pharmaceuticals. The medication delivery method using nanosponges is one of the most promising fields in pharmacy. It can be used as a biocatalyst carrier for vaccines, antibodies, enzymes, and proteins to be released. The existing study enlightens on the preparation method, evaluation, and prospective application in a medication delivery system and also focuses on patents filed in the field of nanosponges.Copyright © 2023 The Authors.

ABSTRACT

Understanding particle settlement in channeled fluids has wide applications, such as fine particulate matter, coronavirus particle transport, and the migration of solid particles in water. Various factors have been investigated but few studies have acknowledged the channel's effect on settlement dynamics. This study developed a coupled interpolated bounce-back lattice Boltzmann-discrete element model and examined how a channel's width affects particle settlement. A factor k denoting the ratio of the channel's width and the particle diameter was defined. The terminal settling velocity for a single particle is inversely proportional to k, and the time that the particle takes to reach the terminal velocity is positively related to k. When k is greater than 15, the channel width's effects are negligible. For dual particles of the same size, the drafting-kissing-tumbling (DKT) process occurs infinitely in a periodic pattern, with the two particles swapping positions and settling around the channel's centerline. The smaller the k, the sooner the DKT process occurs. The particles collide with the channel wall when k <= 10. For dual particles of different sizes, the DKT process occurs once so that the bigger particle leads the settlement. Both particles settle along the channel's centerline in a steady state. The bigger the k, the bigger the difference in their terminal settling velocities until k = 15. The small particle collides with the channel wall if released under the big particle when k = 6. The findings of this study are expected to inform channeling or pipeline design in relevant engineering practices.

ABSTRACT

Multiphase flows arise in various fields that involve complicated phenomena. Studies have shown that COVID-19 can occur via air microdroplets, and breathing jets with microdroplets turn into turbulent cloud or puffs in cases of coughing and sneezing (Bourouiba et al., 2014). Microdroplets are upturned by buoyancy in the turbulent cloud and transported without falling. Furthermore, they float in air for hours and can be transported over long distances (Mittal et al., 2020). This scenario also involves a mixed phase flow of air and droplets. To simulate these phenomena, a numerical model assuming mechanical and thermal non-equilibrium multiphase flow is required to predict the range of turbulent cloud transport. In this study, to better simulate the turbulent cloud trajectories, a viscosity term is added to a two-phase flow six-equation model (two-fluid modeling or effective-fluid modeling, EFM) developed by Liou et al. (2008). It is a development of a parameter-free, viscous multiphase flow code, based on a single-phase compressible finite-volume solver (Kitamura et al., 2013). This solver is validated in the Poiseuille flow and laminar-flat-plate problem with an isothermal wall through a comparison with the analytical solutions. A detailed simulation of coughing is performed. The location of the turbulent cloud upturned by buoyancy is compared with the data of past studies.

ABSTRACT

We extend our previous investigation of the effects of prehydrodynamic evolution on final-state observables in heavy-ion collisions [38] to smaller systems. We use a state-of-the-art hybrid model for the numerical simulations with optimal parameters obtained from a previous Bayesian study. By studying p-Pb collisions, we find that the effects due to the assumption of a conformal evolution in the prehydrodynamical stage are even more important in small systems. We also show that this effect depends on the time duration of the pre-equilibrium stage, which is further enhanced in small systems. Finally, we show that the recent proposal of a free-streaming with subluminal velocity for the pre-equilibrium stage, thus effectively breaking conformal invariance, can alleviate the contamination of final-state observables. Our study further reinforces the need for moving beyond conformal approaches in pre-equilibrium dynamics modeling, especially when extracting transport coefficients from hybrid models in the high-precision era of heavy-ion collisions.

ABSTRACT

Background/Aims GCA is a systemic vasculitis predominantly affecting the large vessels that requires prompt diagnosis and management. This clinical audit aims to study the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on our GCA service and to identify areas for improvement to ensure good and safe practice amid healthcare crisis. Methods We audited referrals for suspected GCA from February 2021 until September 2022 and measured our patient care against the BSR quality standards. We performed retrospective data collection from digital care record systems and analysed our data using the IBM SPSS Statistics version 29. Results 106 patients with suspected GCA were included, 73% were female and the mean age was 70 years. 75% of the referrals were from primary care. Main presenting symptoms were headaches (95.7%), scalp tenderness (69.6%), tongue/jaw claudication (52.2%), visual symptoms (47.8%), constitutional symptoms (43.5%) and polymyalgic symptoms (21.7%). 33% of patients were diagnosed and treated as GCA. Mean CRP was 23.9mg/L and mean plasma viscosity was 1.89mPA. The mean referral-to-specialist review time has reduced to 1.6 days, compared with 2.7 days pre-pandemic. All patients had vascular ultrasound but only 7.5% had a temporal artery biopsy (TAB), compared with 41% pre-pandemic. Table 1 compares expected and achieved BSR quality standards. Conclusion Changes in work pattern during the pandemic meant that the time from referral to specialist review was significantly reduced, by implementing twice weekly registrar-led 'Hot' clinics and reserving ad hoc slot(s) in on-call consultant's clinics for GCA referrals. We have ramped up our vascular imaging capacity for vascular ultrasound during the pandemic in response to reduced surgical operating capacity for TAB. Strategies to address areas for improvement identified in this audit include: (1) clear and timely communication with referrer about steroid initiation and dosage, at the time of referral;(2) improving communication with primary care, emphasising need for urgent Ophthalmology input in patients with suspected GCA-related visual symptoms, through updating our regional GCA guideline for primary care;(3) standardising and implementing a GCA review proforma or checklist in our department to ensure that the BSR GCA care bundle is being implemented and addressed at the earliest opportunity. ABSTRACT

Introduction: Acute pancreatitis affects a significant population globally. Usual etiologies are gallstones, alcohol, hypertriglyceridemia, medications;less frequent are trauma, hypercalcemia, infections, toxins, ischemia, anatomic anomalies, vasculitis, and idiopathic. Pancreatitis post coronary intervention is an uncommon cause with only 19 published cases in the last two decades. Being cognizant of this etiology is important given the increasing number of patients undergoing angiography. Case Description/Methods: An 81-year-old female with hypertension, diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, prior cholecystectomy underwent left lower extremity angioplasty at an outside center. Within a few hours, she started having severe epigastric pain radiating to her back, nausea, vomiting and loose bloody stool. She presented to the emergency department 24 hours after symptom onset. Epigastric tenderness was present on exam. Labs revealed leukocytosis (24,450/muL), elevated lipase (1410 U/L), elevated creatinine (1.3 mg/dL), lactate (3.1 mmol/L), calcium 9.4 mg/dL and triglycerides 161 mg/dL. Incidentally, found to be positive for COVID-19. Normal common bile duct diameter seen on sonogram. CT angiogram of the abdomen/pelvis showed acute pancreatitis, duodenal and central small bowel enteritis (Figure). She was not on any medications known to cause pancreatitis and denied alcohol use. Patient improved with analgesics and intravenous fluids. She had no recurrence of bloody stools and hemoglobin remained stable. On day 4, she was able to tolerate a regular diet, and leukocyte count and creatinine normalized. Patient did not have any COVID respiratory symptoms, and was discharged. Discussion(s): Given the temporal association to angioplasty and no other identifiable cause, acute pancreatitis was presumed to be due to the contrast used during angioplasty. Other possibilities included cholesterol embolism but no peripheral signs of cholesterol embolism were seen. Patient was an asymptomatic COVID-19 case. Although, there are case series of pancreatitis due to COVID, those were found in very sick symptomatic patients. On review of literature, cholesterol embolism was identified as a definite cause only on autopsy or laparotomy (Table). Other possible mechanisms are: high viscosity of the contrast media leading to ischemia and necrosis, contrast causing NF-kB activation followed by epithelial damage, and vasospasm. Pancreatitis after coronary angiography is rare, nonetheless, an important differential especially if there is a temporal relationship.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: IgM Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a rare subtype of MM consisting of <1% cases of MM. It is distinguished from Waldenstrom Macroglobinemia, which also produces IgM, by the absence of somatic mutation MYD88. We present a patient with a chief complaint of diarrhea which unknowingly led to his hematological diagnosis Case Description/Methods: A 64 year old male with RA-SLE overlap syndrome on steroids, and recent COVID19 pneumonia, had presented with 5 episodes of watery diarrhea every day and 40 Ib weight loss within 2 months. CT revealed small bowel enteritis and stool studies, including C. diff, cultures, ova and parasites were negative. Diarrhea persisted despite antibiotics, therefore an EGD and Colonoscopy were performed which showed duodenal lymphangiectasia and a normal colon. Duodenal biopsy revealed eosinophilic deposits in the villous lamina propria which stained for IgM and stained negative under congo red ruling out amyloidosis. SPEP and a bone marrow biopsy revealed monoclonal IgMspikes and plasma cells in the bone marrow suggesting MMalong with a co-existing population of CLL. Next-generation sequencing was negative forMYD88, supporting IgM MM instead of Waldenstrom. He developed a protein-losing enteropathy with dramatic hypoalbuminemia (albumin 0.9) and lower extremity edema and DVTs. He was started on chemotherapy and frequent albumin infusions. His diarrhea completely resolved, however not in time, as his other medical comorbidities lagged behind and he developed anasarca and continued to deteriorate. Discussion(s): Plasma cell dyscrasias such as IgM MM or more commonly Waldenstrom have rarely been reported to cause GI symptoms. GI involvement can include direct GI infiltration of plasma cells, IgM deposition, or the finding of a plasmacytoma. It has been speculated that IgM deposits can lead to interstitial viscosity and obstructive lymphangiectasia leading to diarrhea and a protein-losing enteropathy as in our patient. Protein loss has led him to have hypoalbuminemia and possibly loss of antithrombotic proteins that have caused DVTs. Few case reports have suggested that treating the underlying cause with chemotherapy stops diarrhea entirely. Although our patient's diarrhea ceased, we believe that it was not in time for him to entirely recover from the later complications of the disease. We hope that this case can help clinicians to attempt prompt treatment of patients when they find GI specimens showing IgM deposits and they suspect a plasma cell dyscrasia.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Altered mental status (AMS) is a common symptom in patients with liver disease with a wide list of differential diagnoses. Knowledge of etiologies of AMS unique to patients with hepatic dysfunction is vital in order to help recognize, diagnose, and treat the underlying cause in a timely manner. Case Description/Methods: A 46-year-old man with a history of recent COVID infection was transferred to our hospital for further evaluation of acute liver injury and AMS. On arrival, his labs were notable for AST of 408 U/L, ALT of 620 U/L, ALP of 5942 U/L, TB of 11.0 mg/dL, and an INR of 1.1. His work-up included an MRCP that showed segmental biliary ductal dilation with associated restricted diffusion and peribiliary enhancement concerning for sclerosing cholangitis. ERCP revealed a 3cm biliary cast that was removed and noted diffuse rarefaction of ducts throughout the entire biliary tree. A liver biopsy revealed centrizonal cholestasis with portal-based bile ductular reaction and mild bile duct injury. Despite adequate treatment of suspected infection and hepatic encephalopathy, his AMS persisted. His basic metabolic panel (BMP) was notable for Na of 143 mEq/L. A send-out lipid panel that was obtained to work-up his dyslipidemia revealed a total cholesterol of 1018 mg/dL, triglycerides of 420mg/dL, and the presence of lipoprotein X. A venous blood gas (VBG) was obtained showing a Na of 157 mEq/L and serum osmolality was 322 mmol/kg, confirming true hypernatremia. He was slowly treated with hypotonic solutions with significant improvement in his mentation. On follow-up one year later, he has persistent cholestasis and is currently being considered for liver transplant. Discussion(s): The final diagnosis was COVID-related ischemic cholangitis and disappearing bile ducts with persistent cholangiopathy, presenting with severe cholestasis, accumulation of lipoprotein X, and pseudonormonatremia. When faced with severe cholestatic liver disease, clinicians should keep in mind the possibility of accumulation of lipoprotein X and its association with hyperviscosity and spurious electrolyte abnormalities. Clinicians should rely on obtaining blood gas analyses for accurate electrolyte measurement in such cholestatic patients as blood gas analyses utilize direct ion-sensitive electrodes (ISE) to measure electrolytes, whereas routine basic metabolic panels utilize indirect ISE that are liable to spurious results in the presence of hyperlipoproteinemia/lipoprotein X.

ABSTRACT

Background: It is well knowledge that various viral illnesses may interfere with a man's ability to father children. Through the angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 receptor, which is highly concentrated in testicular tissue, the corona virus illness known as COVID-19 may cause harm to several organs. On the other hand, there is a paucity of data about the transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) in sperm, as well as the virus's influence on spermatogenesis and the capacity for fertility. We intended to look into whether or not COVID-19 guys' sperm contained SARS-CoV-2 as well as examine how COVID-19 affected the overall quality of the sperm and the degree to which it's DNA was fragmented. Material(s) and Method(s): The survey was conducted between May 2022 to October 2022, with the participation of 40 male COVID-19 patients who were between the ages of 19 and 45 and enrolled at the RSDKS, Government Medical College, Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh. We tested each sample of sperm with a real-time reverse transcriptase and found no abnormalities. At the time of the initial sample, which took place during COVID-19, a comprehensive examination of the sperm was carried out. This analysis included the calculation of the sperm DNA Fragmentation Index. After 74 days had passed since the first sample, we were able to get the second specimen and carried out the aforementioned tests once again. Result(s): All of the sperm samples that were examined using real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) came back negative for SARS-CoV-2. These samples were taken during the first and second sampling. The initial sample had considerably lower levels of fructose, semen volume, vitality, total motility, sperm concentration, total sperm count, percentage of normal morphology, and cytoplasmic droplet percentage than the subsequent samples. On the other hand, the agglutination of the semen, the percentage of head defects, the DNA Fragmentation Index, the liquefaction time, the viscosity of the semen, and the number of leukocytes all rose. At the second sample, these results were inverted, but not to the level that would be considered optimal. These results all had a p-value less than 0.05, meaning they were statistically significant. As a result, COVID-19 has a detrimental impact on the characteristics of the sperm, including the sperm DNA fragmentation index. Conclusion(s): The quality of the semen remained low up until the second time it was sampled, despite the fact that we were unable to discover SARS-CoV-2 in the sample. It is recommended that assisted reproductive technology (ART) clinics and sperm banking facilities evaluate the quality of the sperm produced by males infected with COVID-19 and exclude men who have a history of being infected with SARS-CoV-2 until the men's sperm quality recovers to normal.Copyright © 2023 Ubiquity Press. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Increased estimated whole blood viscosity (eWBV) predicts higher mortality in patients hospitalized for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study assesses whether eWBV is an early predictor of non-fatal outcomes among patients hospitalized for acute COVID-19 infection. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 9278 hospitalized COVID-19 patients diagnosed within 48 h of admission between February 27, 2020 to November 20, 2021 within the Mount Sinai Health System in New York City. Patients with missing values for major covariates, discharge information, and those who failed to meet the criteria for the non-Newtonian blood model were excluded. 5621 participants were included in the main analysis. Additional analyses were performed separately for 4352 participants who had measurements of white blood cell count, C-reactive protein and D-dimer. Participants were divided into quartiles based on estimated high-shear blood viscosity (eHSBV) and estimated low-shear blood viscosity (eLSBV). Blood viscosity was calculated using the Walburn-Schneck model. The primary outcome was evaluated as an ordinal scale indicating the number of days free of respiratory organ support through day 21, and those who died in-hospital were assigned a value of -1. Multivariate cumulative logistic regression was conducted to evaluate the association between quartiles of eWBV and events. RESULTS: Among 5621 participants, 3459 (61.5%) were male with mean age of 63.2 (SD 17.1) years. The linear modeling yielded an adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of 0.68 (95% CI 0.59-0.79, p value < 0.001) per 1 centipoise increase in eHSBV. CONCLUSIONS: Among hospitalized patients with COVID-19, elevated eHSBV and eLSBV at presentation were associated with an increased need for respiratory organ support at 21 days. These findings are highly relevant, as they demonstrate the utility of eWBV in identifying hospitalized patients with acute COVID-19 infection at increased risk for non-fatal outcomes in early stages of the disease.

ABSTRACT

In recent research, 3D printing has become a powerful technique and has been applied in the last few years to carbon-based materials. A new generation of 3D-printed electrodes, more affordable and easier to obtain due to rapid prototyping techniques, has emerged. We propose a customizable fabrication process for flexible (and rigid) carbon-based biosensors, from biosensor design to printable conductive inks. The electrochemical biosensors were obtained on a 50 µm Kapton® (polyimide) substrate and transferred to a 500 µm PDMS substrate, using a 3D-extrusion-based printing method. The main features of our fabrication process consist of short-time customization implementation, fast small-to-medium batch production, ease of electrochemical spectroscopy measurements, and very good resolution for an extrusion-based printing method (100 µm). The sensors were designed for future integration into a smart wound dressing for wound monitoring and other biomedical applications. We increased their sensibility with electro-deposited gold nanoparticles. To assess the biosensors' functionality, we performed surface functionalization with specific anti-N-protein antibodies for SARS-CoV 2 virus, with promising preliminary results.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people wearing masks in everyday life has increased. At the same time, there has been a noticeable rise in the amount of patients with bad breath (foe-tor ex ore), gingivitis, caries, and xerostomia. The appearance of these symptoms and diseases caused by wearing a mask is designated by the term mask mouth. The aim of this article is to establish the link between wearing protective masks and deteriorating oral health. From the conducted research, it has been es-tablished that wearing a surgical mask over a long period of time leads to reduced air exchange in the mask and "recycling" of exhaled air. This leads to inhalation of air with increased CO2 content and increase in pCO2 in the blood, which is subsequently compensated by rapid and deep breathing in most cases through the mouth. The goal is to exhale the accumulated CO2. As the mask reduces air exchange, the level of CO2 in the mask remains relatively high. Prolonged breathing through the mouth often leads to xerostomia. Saliva is known to have protective functions against the development of bacteria in the oral cavity through its an-tibacterial properties. Xerostomia can be a prerequisite for the development of various diseases of bacterial origin, such as gingivitis. Furthermore, oral respiration leads to an increase in temperature and CO2 in the air in the mask and a decrease in pH in the oral cavity, which are optimal conditions for biofilm formation, plaque buildup, development of most bacteria, e.g., S. mutans, which is the main cause of caries.Copyright © 2022, Bulgarian-American Center. ABSTRACT

A large number of recent studies consider a compartmental SIR model to study optimal control policies aimed at containing the diffusion of COVID-19 while minimizing the economic costs of preventive measures. Such problems are non-convex and standard results need not to hold. We use a Dynamic Programming approach and prove some continuity properties of the value function of the associated optimization problem. We study the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation and show that the value function solves it in the viscosity sense. Finally, we discuss some optimality conditions. Our paper represents a first contribution towards a complete analysis of non-convex dynamic optimization problems, within a Dynamic Programming approach.

ABSTRACT

The current study aims to investigate and compare the effects of waste plastic oil blended with n-butanol on the characteristics of diesel engines and exhaust gas emissions. Waste plastic oil produced by the pyrolysis process was blended with n-butanol at 5%, 10%, and 15% by volume. Experiments were conducted on a four-stroke, four-cylinder, water-cooled, direct injection diesel engine with a variation of five engine loads, while the engine's speed was fixed at 2500 rpm. The experimental results showed that the main hydrocarbons present in WPO were within the range of diesel fuel (C13–C18, approximately 74.39%), while its specific gravity and flash point were out of the limit prescribed by the diesel fuel specification. The addition of n-butanol to WPO was found to reduce the engine's thermal efficiency and increase HC and CO emissions, especially when the engine operated at low-load conditions. In order to find the suitable ratio of n-butanol blends when the engine operated at the tested engine load, the optimization process was carried out by considering the engine's load and ratio of the n-butanol blend as input factors and the engine's performance and emissions as output factors. It was found that the multi-objective function produced by the general regression neural network (GRNN) can be modeled as the multi-objective function with high predictive performances. The coefficient of determination (R2), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and root mean square error (RSME) of the optimization model proposed in the study were 0.999, 2.606%, and 0.663, respectively, when brake thermal efficiency was considered, while nitrogen oxide values were 0.998, 6.915%, and 0.600, respectively. As for the results of the optimization using NSGA-II, a single optimum value may not be attained as with the other methods, but the optimization's boundary was obtained, which was established by making a trade-off between brake thermal efficiency and nitrogen oxide emissions. ABSTRACT

A better understanding of the fluid dynamics of disease transmission by disintegrated respiratory droplets has been the focus of great attention since the recent outbreak of COVID-19. In particular, human respiratory activities such as coughing, sneezing and even talking and eating expel a large amount of pathogen-laden droplets. Particularly, during eating or drinking, the physical properties of saliva can be changed. In this study, we investigate the atomization morphology of expelled artificial saliva mixtures from the perspective of varying fluid physical properties, specifically surface tension and dynamic viscosity. Using high-speed shadowgraph experiments on artificial saliva, we visualize and analyse the disintegration of saliva liquid sheets into ligaments and droplets. We find that the viscosity and surface tension affect the droplet size formed from expelled saliva and follow scaling laws that have been previously observed and predicted for constant shear viscosity. We conclude that the changes in physical properties of saliva induced by eating and drinking tend to favour the formation of smaller droplets during sneezing or coughing, which could drive the airborne transmission pathway of pathogens. Furthermore, we derive a theoretical model based on scaling arguments that shows the breakup time of ligaments produced from the artificial saliva mixtures is dependent on the capillary number.

ABSTRACT

The use of immunomodulators is one strategy in maintaining the immune system during the Covid-19 pandemic. Sungkai leaf extract from Peronema canecens keeps the immune system in good shape. Therefore, in this study, we formulated a self-emulsifying loaded sungkai leaves extract (SE-SLE) with oleic acid and virgin coconut oil (VCO) oil phases, span 80 and tween 80 as surfactants and co-surfactants in the form of PEG-400 and PG. Chemometric analysis was conducted by observing the typical pattern in each FTIR-ATR spectra. The pattern is divided into several groups based on the wavenumber and analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) to identify the compounds contained therein. Grouping based on chemical properties via IR spectra on SE-SLE resulted in two large groups. The results obtained are beneficial as initial information in developing and optimizing the self-nano emulsifying drug delivery system formula.Copyright © RJPT All right reserved.

[] Airway mucus is an important part of the defense barrier function of the airway. Abnormal secretion of airway mucus is closely related to recurrent attacks,delay or aggravation of respiratory infectious or infectious diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD),community-acquired pneumonia, and coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19). Lianhua Qingke tablets,an innovative traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)developed under the guidance of the theory of collateral disease of TCM,has the function of reducing phlegm and relieving cough,which can reduce the generation and viscosity of sputum and promote sputum excretion. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Elevated estimated blood viscosity (EBV), derived from hematocrit and globulins, is associated with thrombotic complications, organ failure, and higher mortality in COVID-19 patients. Although informative, EBV does not account for cellular interactions or fibrinogen. OBJECTIVE: Investigate whether patients with acute and recent COVID-19 have altered whole blood viscosity (WBV) when measured at both high and low shear rates using in vitro blood samples from patients. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 58 patients: 15 in the intensive care unit with acute COVID-19, 32 convalescent (9 < 8weeks [W] from acute infection, 23 > 8 W), and 11 controls without COVID-19. WBV was measured at high (300 s-1) and low (5 s-1) shear rates (HSR, LSR) using a scanning capillary viscometer.RESULTSAcute and convalescent patients < 8 W had mean WBV at LSR (16.0 centipoise [cP] and 15.1 cP) and HSR (5.1 cP and 4.7 cP). Mean WBV of convalescent > 8 W and control patients were 12.3 cP and 13.0 cP at LSR, and 4.1 cP and 4.2 cP at HSR. Acute and < 8 W patients had significantly higher WBV at both HSR and LSR compared to patients > 8 W (all p≤0.01). No significant differences in WBV were observed between acute and < 8 W patients, or between patients > 8 W and controls. CONCLUSIONS: Hyperviscosity provides a possible explanation for thrombotic risk in acute and convalescent (< 8 W) patients. These findings have important implications for thromboprophylaxis.
